With ball season & mid-winter Christmas parties just around the corner, we thought we'd share some insight on beauty brilliance from one of our favourite hair & make-up artists Rachael Brook.

We were fortunate enough to work with the seriously talented Rachael on our RUBY Hanaautumn/winter 15 campaign with American model, Roxanne.

RACHEL Profile

What was your beauty brief for the RUBY autumn/winter campaign shoot?

The beauty brief was simple, sleek hair with a graphic cat eye and flawless, dewy skin for make up.

How would you describe the makeup & hair look you created for Roxanne?

I kept the hair minimal - a middle part with a sleek ponytail- so the make up and the clothes could really be the stars of the show. For make up, I enhanced Roxanne’s already incredible eyebrows, added a black, graphic winged liner, and a few lashes of course. I gave her skin a dewy, highlighted look and made her lips look naturally stained for a youthful vibe.

What were the key products used to create Roxanne’s look?

M.A.C Face & Body Foundation, M.A.C Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle, M.A.C Fluidline in BlackTrack and Benefit’s Benetint for make up. L’Oreal Elnett Hairspray and my new Rose Gold ghd for hair!

What’s the best thing about working with Steven Chee?

The best thing about working with Steven is that you’re guaranteed to have an enjoyable day, with gangster beats playing in the background, and beautiful images at the end of it. We also have a bit of a brotherly/sisterly type of friendship, which adds a bit of fun to the day.

What’s your favourite piece from our RUBY autumn/winter 2015 collection?

The Zanshi Crop Top. It’s my favourite because it can be mixed and matched with so many cute pieces, and because it comes with a matching skirt, and anything co-ord is a winner in my books.

What’s your favourite thing about autumn?

Autumn is my favourite time of year, not only because it’s when I celebrate my birthday, or because of fashion week, or because the leaves falling from the trees make every day feel a little romantic, but mainly because it means I can start playing around with my clothes again. In Summer I’m just too damn hot to wear most of my favourite styles, so the moment it starts to cool down I feel like I’m back in the fashion game.

What’s your favourite job you’ve done to date?

That is a very, very hard question to answer! There have been so many! I feel like I should say the Vogue Cover Shoot that I worked on with Steven, because obviously that’s a huge deal and such an amazing opportunity to be a part of something that iconic. Although, the jobs I enjoy most are the ones where I feel like I’ve really created something beautiful, and different, and where I’ve been challenged, and I probably get that feeling mostly on test shoots – particularly the ones with Steven! I also thoroughly enjoy creating YouTube tutorials, which is new for me, but a nice addition to my career in make up.

What’s the best location that your job has taken you to?

The Cook Islands, for a week with Cosmopolitan Mag. Aitutaki was my favourite spot to be exact. It’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. The water was blue and crystal clear, the beaches were empty and the sand was perfectly white. The locals were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and it was just a great trip overall. I always dream of going back there.

Summer Essentials: Eleanor Pendleton

Australian beauty expert Eleanor Pendleton is the fresh-faced babe behind Gritty Pretty, one of our go-to beauty blogs. Fresh from launching Gritty Pretty's first online magazine (which we suggest you check out!), we caught up with Eleanor to chat about her summer beauty tips, regimes and essentials.......

Three beauty items you can't live without in summer...

  • Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF 30 is my go-to daily sunscreen because it doesn't create an oil finish under my foundation. Most weekends I try to go bare faced, which means I'll opt for ModelCo's Daily Face Matte SPF 50+, which has an amazing built in balm that's perfect for summer.

  • CLINIQUE Chubby Stick Cheer Colour Balm give cheeks a fresh, dewy finish which I love for summer. My favourite shade has to be Robust Rhubarb!

  • SK-II Facial Treatment UV Protection nourishes my skin thanks to added Pitera! It also offers SPF 15 protection while remaining completely lightweight and non-greasy.

Number one beauty tip for summer...

Always wear SPF and keep hydrated! I know it's not original but there's a reason why you have read and heard this so many times before.

Do you have any homemade summer beauty tips?

Coconut oil works a treat as a body moisturiser, eye makeup remover and leave-in hair mask. When using it in your hair, remember to shampoo thoroughly afterwards.

What new beauty innovations are you looking forward to trialing over the coming warmer months?

I'm looking forward to testing Rationale's Luminizing Serum SPF 50+ which is a foundation, serum and SPF hybrid, dream!

What do you think is going to be the next big beauty trend?

Cushion BB creams – they're going gangbusters in Asia right now so I expect we'll see those infiltrate the Australian and New Zealand beauty markets within the next 5 years.

What's on your summer playlist?

Mark Ronson - Uptown Funk

Boy & Bear - Part Time Believer

The Griswolds - Heart of a Lion

Tropical Zombie - R.A.C

Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way

Milky Chance - Stolen Dance

Arcade Fire - Wake Up

How do you stray active over summer?

I've never been a runner or someone who loves the gym but reformer pilates is my escape. I do 3 - 4 classes a week and it's my one hour to completely switch off. I also really love walking and often go for coastal walks as I live so close to the beach.

Favourite summer cocktail...

Mojitos! They're refreshing and down far too easy.

Secret summer beach escape...

Curl Curl Beach in Sydney - it's my local and never crowded.

What is your signature summer dish?

Chilli lime prawn, mango and avocado salad!

What is your advice heading into 2015?

Live each day as if it were your last.

Our summer playlists just got better and our Christmas wishlists have definitely gotten longer. Thanks Eleanor! x

Helene's Beauty Cabinet: Best on the Block

Wondering which sunscreen to slip, slop, slap with this summer? Our beauty expert Helene from Pretty Beautiful shares her favourite screens to beat those summer rays this month....

Finally we’re seeing a little sun of late, which for me is a reminder that summer is, maybe on its way and new sunscreen needs to go on the shopping list. Whenever I’ve asked beauty experts – be they dermatologists, make up artists or cosmetic surgeons – for their pick when it comes to anti-aging skincare, they all agree that the most important thing you can do to keep your skin looking good well into old age is wear a sunscreen. Daily. No arguments, no forgetting on a cloudy day, no saying, “my olive complexion is a sunblock in itself”! Most last twelve months max after being opened too, so if you’re still got some sitting around in your beach bag from this time last year then chuck it - ASAP!

One formula that was a winner from the get go is Osmosis Shade SPF 30 Sunscreen/Moisturiser. Designed for daily use, it is a broad-spectrum physical sunscreen that protects against the damaging effects of both UVA and UVB rays whilst providing great hydration. All natural, it works by utilizing micronized and coated zinc oxide and titanium oxide, making it a safe sunscreen option that provides transparent coverage while ensuring that your UV protection remains harmless and non-toxic. The high-performance, luxurious sunscreen-meets-moisturiser is ideal for all skin types and can be applied under makeup or after a shave, and has a vanilla, grapefruit and coconut scent that brings the tropics inside even on a cloudy day.

Neutrogena’s Beach Defence range is the newest from the dermatologist recommended suncare brand. With SPF 50 it is high enough to really make a difference, and works to combat the effect of prolonged exposure to water and the sun, both of which affect the permeability of the skin’s barrier and make us more susceptible to UV rays. It’s formulated with the brand’s famous Helioplex Technology - which harnesses the power of two sunscreens, Azovenzone and Oxybenxzone - so forms a broad spectrum UVA and UVB protective barrier that has been clinically proven time and time again to help skin defend against summer elements. It not only protects skin against photodamage (yes!), premature aging (double yes!), and sunburn (essential); but even reduces the amount of free radicals released into the skin - amazing.

Last up is my most used brand from last summer - COOLA. A beautifully packaged collection of organic sun essentials produced out of Southern California, the COOLA range includes a plethora of yummy products that are high performance yet delicate and kind on the environment. It is produced in limited quantity batches in California (where the company is based), meaning that the range can be reformulated often, taking advantage of new developments in sun science and labelling regulations almost as they happen.

The COOLA range has three distinct organic sunscreen collections to choose from: Plant UV, Mineral, and Classic, each based on different active ingredients. The Classic Sunscreens use organic active ingredients (commonly referred to as “chemicals”), while the Mineral Sunscreens use mineral (“physical”) active ingredients like Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide to scatter and reflect UVA/UVB rays. The mineral sunscreens are effective right after application, whilst the Plant UV collection protects the skin with naturally protective plant cells that contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
